Archetypes of visitors based on motivations

Relevant experiences can become important ones if the people experiencing them are able to elaborate a meaning around them. In addition to this idea, it is important to consider the motivations that are behind the visitors that made them attend and interact with the exhibition and experience. Here you can find archetypes based on the research developed by Jhon Falk, and were pivotal during the development of this method.

Visitor Type-04.jpg

The one who helps others to enjoy the experience. Their visit is primarily focused on enabling the learning and experience of others in their accompanying social group.

Visitor Type-02.jpg

Their visit is related to a sense of duty or obligation to honour the memory of those represented at the exhibition.

Visitor Type-05.jpg

They seek a contemplative, spiritual and/or restorative experience. The Institution is like a refuge from the work-a-day world or as a confirmation of their religious/ spiritual beliefs.

Visitor Type-03.jpg

Are visitor motivated to visit a particular exhibition because it speaks to their sense of heritage and/or Big “I” identity or personhood.

Visitor Type-06.jpg

Curiosity-driven visitors with a general interest in the contents of the exhibition. They expect to experience something that will grab their attention, curiosity and learning.

Visitor Type-08.jpg

The content is connected to their professional or hobbyist passions. The visit is motivated by a desire to satisfy a specific content-related objective.

Visitor Type-07.jpg

The institution, place or exhibition is a must-see destination. “Been there done that” approach, because is important for them to demonstrate this.

Some considerations during this moment:

- The archetypes are not static. A person can change its type during the experience, or even before attending to an exhibition.

- Consider that while our exhibition concept will resonate with maybe one or two specific types of visitors, that doesn't mean to disregard the other. You can think of this situation as an opportunity to elaborate an attractive exhibition for more people. However, this cannot be prioritized over the narrative or the respect towards the exhibition and its content.

- These types work in synchrony with the effects describes during moment #6. You can create memorable experiences for the respectful pilgrim, or personal experiences for the affinity seekers. Explore the combinations.

- These are based on the research developed by Falk et al. You can look at the theoretical foundations of this method in the "About the method section".
